The 12 year old Glenfiddich Single Malt is the one single malt you can find at every LCBO store in a variety of bottle sizes ranging from 375 mL to 1,140 mL. The smaller bottles are even displayed at the cash register at some locations in an effort to remind you not to leave the store without one. The standards 750 mL costs $52.95 at the time of this review, but will most likely change soon because only a few years ago the same bottle retailed for around $42 and then for $48.
The 12 year old has a light golden color and a swirl of the glass reveals its moderately oily character. The aroma is light and refreshing with hints of pears, oak, green apple, fresh meadow, and spices. The flavor is comprised of pears, sweet green apples, sweet plums, leather and spices near the finish, which is moderately long and reveals other notes, such as butterscotch, oak and bananas. Very light and easy to drink scotch.
A few drops of water don’t do much to the color, but help bring out sweet caramel notes in the aroma with hints of freshly oiled leather. The flavor profile is a hint lighter with more of the pears and other fruits. The finish is almost about the same, though it feels a bit rougher around the edges with even a hint of buttered popcorn and booze at the very end.
Overall, this is a very light and easy to drink scotch that is great neat or slightly diluted. Best of all, it is available in every LCBO store where scotches are sold.
