I thought it was a mistake when I saw a white Stella can in the cider section at the LCBO, but it was no mistake – Stella Artois is officially in the cider business in Canada…and probably the rest of the world, but I am too lazy to check that. For $3.25 (daymn that’s a lot) you get a 473 mL can of apple flavored cider beverage. Yes, you read that right. Cider is one of the ingredients, as are another 7. But let’s not judge a book by its covers.
The cider…or should I say Cidre, has a golden color and a sweet apple aroma dominated by what it appears to be real apples, but also a bit of caramel. The flavor is unique with an immediate acidic bite, followed by some caramel, followed by semi-sweet apples and pears which take you to the crisp and almost clean finish. Some traces of apples and caramel linger and give your mouth an interesting candy-like apple flavor. This is definitely a unique cider with an enjoyable caramel twist to it, but the sourness would make me reconsider having more than 2 of these in a row.
