As an adult who enjoys different beers, the weeks leading up to Christmas are some of my favorite because of all the festive and over the top beers breweries are releasing to fight for your dollars. Wychwood is one of my favorites. And this year LCBO has something new from Wychwood – Dunkel Fester. Also…loving the expression on the label.
This 4.4% brew is indeed “a disturbingly dark beer”. It pours dark brown, almost black. Holding it under light reveals some dark brown/black olive-like hues around the edges, but for the most parts, it is a black beer. The nose is heavy on roasted malt, nuts, espresso, dark chocolate and moist fruit cake. On the palate, the beer is more bitter than expected, with a healthy dose of espresso, dark chocolate, heavily roasted nuts and a hint of dry black olives. The finish is semi-dry and bitter with traces of espresso, chocolate and grassy hops.
I love bitter beverages and this is not bitter in the same sense an overly hopped IPA with high alpha acids is bitter. But this gets its bitterness from the malt. This is enjoyable both as a sipper and as a quick drink. But remember that it is bitter.
